Artist Statement

Freedom lives in less.

In quiet spaces, in the pause between things — this is where life feels most whole. I paint with that belief in mind, building textured surfaces that lean into restraint. Thick layers of oil unfold slowly, yet each mark feels deliberate, each gesture pared back to what is essential.

My minimalist approach to palette reflects my feelings on life and art: less is more. While painting, I keep only what is necessary — nothing extra, nothing untrue.

I believe the smallest things can be precious, and I hope my work offers a quiet escape from the noise — a place where the mind can soften, expand, and breathe.

I have learned that simplicity is not emptiness — it is clarity. It is knowing what to hold and what to let go. After loss and deep grief, I found myself drawn to what remains: the flicker of light, the quiet weight of presence — and how those things expand when nothing crowds them.

My work is a reflection of that. A quiet offering. A reminder that what is simplest is often what’s most treasured.

About

Kayla Gale is a self-taught contemporary fine artist living and working from her studio home in the quiet prairies of Canada. She is known primarily for her muted colours and large scale minimal oil paintings. Kayla is inspired by emotional influences of being a woman, the concept of wabi sabi, and the constant tension found between intentional marks and the and unplanned. Kayla strongly believes in incorporating her life with her art, and her art with her lifestyle. When she is not painting, Kayla is spending time with her two children, her husband, her cat, and her rabbit Astrid.
